
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar born on 1820,Sept26 in Midnapore(West Bengal,India). He died on 1891,July29.
His real full name was 'Ishwar Chandra Bandopadhyaya'.'Vidyasagar'(ocean of knowledge)title was given from the Sanskrit college,for his excellent performance in studies.
In 1841 he was a professor(Sanskrit) at Fort William College(Calcutta).In 1846, he joined the Sanskrit College as Assistant Secretary. In 1847, with his friend 'Madan Mohan Tarkalankar' he set up the 'Sanskrit Press'.
Brahmin problem
In 1849 ,Rasamoy Dutta (the Secretary of the 'Sanskrit College') wanted the College to remain only for Brahmins. But Vidyasagar wanted it for students from all castes and it made a huge problem. He resigned from that College. Later, Vidyasagar rejoined the College, and made many changes to the College's syllabus.
Translation work
Vidyasagar realized that modern science is the key for nations future. He translated some scientists biography like 'Copernicus, Newton, Herschel'.
Widow Remarriages
getting help from people like Akshay Kumar Dutta, Vidyasagar introduced the practice of widow remarriage in Hindu society. Vidyasagar tried to make succes 'Widow Remarriage Act XV of 1856' in India.
Alphabet reform
Vidyasagar was a first-rate linguist. He reconstructed the Bengali alphabet and reformed Bengali typography into an alphabet of twelve vowels and forty consonants
